Industries & Applications

SOFRANEL offers a wide range of defective parts for training purposes, whether for COFREND certification, internal training for industries or service providers, or for public and private education (technical high schools, universities, IUT, engineering schools, etc.).
These cases serve as an excellent and practical training tool. They provide valuable information regarding: the different characteristic defects, how to identify and interpret them based on the signals or indications provided by these inspection methods. Additionally, these cases allow students to gain the necessary experience to compare the defect indications revealed on the test specimens with the macrographs and radiographs provided. Using these cases can reduce training time while greatly improving the understanding of defects, ultimately leading to a more reliable interpretation of the indications provided by the various methods. They are designed to meet the growing training needs and have been successfully integrated into many internationally recognized training programs such as: PCN, ASNT, DGZfP, Nortest, EN 473, and many others. The terminology and description of defects are in accordance with the AFNOR NF EN ISO 6520.1 standard. These cases are available with test specimens made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.

Case Contents:

A set of 10 easy-to-handle test specimens made of carbon steel, each containing a different defect in type, size, and location. All of these specimens are coated with a transparent lacquer to prevent corrosion. A photo-radiograph (if applicable) of each defect type. The cases for ultrasonics, magnetoscopy, and dye penetrant, as well as the demonstration case, contain examples of photo-radiographs. The radiography cases contain radiographs of each test specimen. Note: All of these radiographs were taken from carbon steel test specimens.
A macrographic cut of each defect covered with a transparent adhesive film to prevent corrosion. Note: All macrographic cuts are made from carbon steel. Information on defect locations: type, approximate dimensions, and locations of defects.
Control and acceptance criteria. A magnifying glass.
A certificate of conformity providing information on the control criteria used (to allow for comparisons). These attractive and robust cases are made of light gray polypropylene with molded black compartments. Dimensions and weight: 42 x 37 x 12 cm, 11 kg

Important Note:

The educational cases for magnetoscopy and dye penetrant contain an identical selection of samples with surface-breaking defects. However, a distinctive case should be assigned for dye penetrant testing and another for magnetoscopy. This is because the magnetic particles of magnetic liquids tend to partially block or seal surface-breaking defects, so the penetrant used in dye penetrant testing cannot penetrate the defects, which makes the dye penetrant inspection unreliable. While it is always possible to perform a reliable magnetoscopy test after dye penetrant testing, the reverse is not true: hence the need to assign one case per non-destructive testing method.

Product Range:

MAGNETOSCOPY and DYE PENETRANT Case (MT/PT)

The 3 T-shaped specimens and the 7 plaque-shaped specimens feature a selection of surface-breaking defects typically encountered. They allow for the understanding and identification of defect types and comparison with the provided macrographic cuts and photo-radiographs. Furthermore, fundamental detection and interpretation techniques for surface-breaking defects can be developed. Material: Carbon steel.

VISUAL INSPECTION Case (VT)

The T-shaped specimen and the 9 other plaque-shaped specimens feature a selection of welding defects and discontinuities commonly encountered. They allow for the understanding and recognition of defect types and comparison with the provided macrographic cuts and photo-radiographs. Furthermore, fundamental detection and interpretation techniques can be developed. Material: Carbon steel.

ULTRASONIC Case (UT)

The T-shaped specimen and the 9 other plaque-shaped specimens feature a selection of surface-breaking or internal defects in welds commonly encountered. They allow for the understanding and identification of defect types based on ultrasonic echoes and comparison with the provided macrographic cuts and photo-radiographs. Furthermore, fundamental ultrasonic detection techniques and defect size evaluation can be developed. Material: Carbon steel or aluminum.

RADIOGRAPHY Case (RT)

The T-shaped specimen and the 9 other plaque-shaped specimens feature a selection of surface-breaking defects and welding defects. They allow for the understanding and identification of defect types and their radiographic images, and comparison with the provided macrographic cuts and photo-radiographs. Furthermore, fundamental radiographic detection and interpretation techniques can be developed. Material: Carbon steel or aluminum.

DEMONSTRATION Case (DM)

The T-shaped specimen and the 9 other plaque-shaped specimens provide a variety of carefully selected pieces from each of the other cases, offering an overview of defects and their detection through the implementation of various non-destructive testing techniques. Additionally, the specimens can be used to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of each non-destructive testing technique. Material: Carbon steel. NOTE: All photo-radiographs are reproductions of actual radiographs. Therefore, they are only representative of the defects contained in the provided test specimens.
