The scanner is designed to be as light, simple, and reliable as possible, while ensuring its adherence when crossing obstacles in real-world conditions.
Ultrasonic measurements sometimes require the use of scaffolding, lifting equipment, etc. The additional cost and time spent can be reduced by using a remote scanner.
This method is also safer, especially in areas such as tank roofs, where the remaining thickness may be low.
The Spider is attached to the surface to be inspected using its high-strength rare-earth magnetic wheels. The scanner's wheels are asymmetrical and have a much larger diameter than other models, which is crucial for overcoming obstacles like those found on storage tanks. It also features four-wheel drive, a flexible suspension, and high torque, making it a reliable tool for operating in difficult conditions.
All components have been designed, selected, and assembled so that the Spider is a high-performance and high-tech tool, both ultra-durable and highly maneuverable. For example, the drive belts, which connect the motor shaft to the wheels, can handle high torque but are lighter and require less maintenance than metal chains. Belt tension can be easily adjusted if necessary. The use of two motors simplifies steering, which is controlled by an industrial joystick.
Made from lightweight metal, the Spider weighs only 5 kg. The motors and connectors are sealed in enclosures to ensure waterproofing, including the electrical wiring.
The Spider can be modified to work with different transducer configurations. By default, it is equipped with an irrigated shoe, mounted with a two-point fixture that allows the probe to rotate to keep it flat on the surface and maintain the sensor perpendicular.
The standard 30-meter umbilical contains the RG58 coaxial cable for the ultrasonic signal, the water feed hose, motor control, and encoder cables.
